Superman Returns

The teaser trailer.

  1. Well, it obviously doesn't show plot or anything, but I think it looks good for one main reason. Trailers are supposed to invoke the feeling of watching the movie, the sort of emotion you're supposed to feel while watching it. A Michael Bay trailer is going to have some hard rock and a bunch of explosions.

And if they chose that particular dramatic music and that particular Brando voiceover from the first film - and given that Bryan Singer is a talented and capable director - I have very high hopes for what it could be.

  2. "I have sent you, my only son."

    huh... sounds familiar...

Evangelical Superman? Wouldn't surprise me, especially on the heels of The Chronicles of Narnia.

  3. I'm feeling a little too skin-crawly from the god overtones. I know, people say Superman always had that, but I've been a big superhero comic nerd for a long time, and I've never had such an overwhelming feeling of being preached at by a comic before.

It made me shudder a little. I'm ALL sorts of filled with trepidation about what they're going to do to this movie now! I want my usual superheroes, not just another outlet to be told someone's god died for my sins!

  4. Thes question is: what did you think of the original Donner Superman film? The voiceover in the trailer was obviously taken from there, so if anything it was Donner and Puzo that did the preaching! I just like the optimistic mood it gives paired with the Williams score.

Word has it Singer toned down the Christ symbolism in this one by comparison. I don't generally have a problem with characters being "Christlike," in the sense of being a savior figure. And I have a really hard time imagining the Bryan Singer of The Usual Suspects and X-Men taking what he describes as his favorite superhero and using it to prosthletize.

But I guess we'll have to wait and see.
