Isn't it funny?

Isn't it funny that when Republicans heard that the new Star Wars was about an insane, evil leader who slowly wrested dictatorial power from the democratically-elected Senate by instigating an unjust war under false pretenses the first thing they thought was, "Hey, they must be talking about us!"?

  1. I guess I'm out of the loop--are there Republicans who've actually said this?

  2. Yeah.

There was media coverage of some conservative groups calling the movie "anti-Bush." The following mentions some of it, but I'm too lazy to do more research.

  3. Well, there is a reason why the Sith use RED lightsabers, while the Jedi use BLUE. :-)

As the movie says, "Only a Sith deals in absolutes."

  4. from the article, the "you're with us or against us line" seems like a pretty clear shot across the Bush admin's bow. Unlike most of the planet, I'll probably wait and see Sith on DVD. I still haven't seen the previous episode (where lil' Yoda apparantly goes airborne). Anyway, there's a big international film fest going on in Seattle right now, and I'd feel "guilty" if I spent money on anything that doesn't have sub-titles and a suicide scene... :-)

  5. When Hayden Christensen was asked if the movie was anti-Bush, he replied, "Absolutely." There's not really been any effort to pretend it isn't.

  6. Star Wars has subtitles, and kind of a suicide. ;-)

  7. I went ahead and saw Sith with my wife Saturday. It was visually interesting, but we were both more than a little bored. There were a lot of wierd moments regarding their technologies that made me think, "If they can do X... why can't they just do Y?" I also thought Anakin's baptism by fire to become Vader was too gruesome for the millions of kids that have seen and will see the film.

  8. More puzzling than the outrage about the film is the idea that anyone would consider it wrong to point out what twisted, evil bastards George W. Bush and his cronies are.

As for Gene's comment about kids seeing Episode III: there's a reason the film is rated PG-13. Maybe parents will finally start paying attention to stuff like that... but probably not.

  9. On the one hand, I can see the point that kids can watch the first two but have to wait to see the third, which kind of sucks for them. On the other hand, I'd certainly let a child under 13 see a PG-13 movie. PG means "parental guidance," not "no children" like NC does. I watched Aliens with my parents in 4th grade. I dreamed about them once or twice, but none the worse for wear, because my parents were probably as dilligent as possible with explaining how things worked. We watched the old Discovery Channel show Movie Magic showing how they puppeted the queen, for instance.
