Meet Your Meat

Now, I'm not a huge fan of PETA.  They've got their hearts in the right place, but they're over the top and I think they've got their tactics completely wrong.  They just piss people off.  However . . .

If you want to know why I am a vegetarian, watch this video free online.  Be forewarned: it is graphic and may be disturbing, but that's the point.

  1. Heartbreaking to say the least, but nothing I wasn't already aware of.

I have been cutting way back on meat here lately. I am considering going back to vegetarian.

I'm curious though, what do you do about dairy and eggs?

And how do you make sure you have a balanced diet? I only ask because I may soon be a vegetarian again and I am curious as to waht you do.

  2. Presently, I still eat dairy and eggs, though I try to minimize them. I certainly eat them when I eat out, since there are so few truly vegan chocies at your average restaurant. At home, I drink soymilk, mainly because I like it. Although I've been sloppy, ideally I would only buy free-range cheese and eggs. Unfortunately, when a supplier says "free range," the only requirement is that the animals are exposed to open air. They can still be packed in, abused, and subject to just about anything else. So basically, my goal is to minimize my consumption. If there were less deman, there would be no need for factory farming. Maybe one day I'll be closer to vegan than vegetarian, but not yet.

As to a balanced diet, well, I'm not the healthiest eater in the world, and since I'm not doing the vegetarianism for health reasons, I don't give it as much thought as I should. Really I ate pretty much the same as I did when I was an omnivore except for the meat. Lately I have been trying to actually eat healthily, but that is a seperate issue from the cruelty-related vegetarianism.
